Description:
- Beach Cities Health District is a public agency formed in 1955 by the voters of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to provide health care services in the community.
- Partnerships & Innovation Department Key Functions include innovation, partnership development, policy advocacy & legislative affairs and revenue generation.
- Innovation pursues development and implementation of innovative initiatives aimed at advancing public health practices, improving health outcomes and addressing gaps in community health needs.
- One charitable giving philosophy involves engaging the community as partners in prevention, increasing visibility and brand awareness, building organization resilience and innovation, and strengthening our workforce and systems.
- The Partnerships & Innovation department is seeking a Program Development intern who can support multidisciplinary functions ranging from establishing processes and procedures for medical reimbursements, fundraising, policy tracking, and data analysis.
- Listed below are internship project examples. Internship assignments offered based on interests, needs and availability.
Duties:
REVENUE GENERATION: Pursue grant opportunities, medical reimbursements and charitable giving strategies for innovation programming or current District programming and ensure its sustainability.
- Developing Processes & Procedures: Establish procedures for processing medical reimbursements through the CYBHI multi-payer fee schedule
- Fundraising: Develop campaign messaging, support donor engagement, priority mapping and contact management
- Research and Grant Writing: Assess local, state, and federal grants and private foundations and assist in grant writing process
PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Build strategic partnerships and identify opportunities for collaboration through a collective impact model approach.
- Restaurant Marketing & Outreach: Engage with Blue Zones Project restaurants and develop social media marketing strategies. Outreach and engagement with Blue Zones Project partners.
- Program Planning & Development: Assist staff in planning and coordinating donor engagement events and Blue Zones Project programs
- Qualitative Data: Collect testimonials, quotes and photos to add to our Blue Zones Project Index, a database that will be used on social media, BZP demonstration site visits and case studies.
POLICY ADVOCACY & LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS: Influence public health decision-making, funding initiatives
and the allocation of resources to support innovative approaches to health.
- Educational Programming: Support program development of livability and substance use prevention campaigns by conducting research and creating educational materials
- Advocacy Development: Under direction of supervisor, work on creating an advocacy toolkit to encourage residents to civically engage in infrastructure projects that will enhance the built environment and encourage safe and connected communities
- Community Engagement: Develop survey tools to gather community input and support for specific building related environmental projects.
- Data Analysis: Analyze Well-Being Index data and other metrics in Beach Cities and South Bay to capture successes and enhance existing health programming
- Legislation and Project Tracking: Track relevant city council and state projects, programs and initiatives related to public health
Qualifications Needed:
- Strong interest in community and public health
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Organized and detail oriented
- Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft programs (e.g., Word, Excel, social media platforms, etc.)
- Experience with Smartsheet/project management a plus

Training:
Once the intern clears the screening process, the following training will be provided:
- BCHD Orientation
- Initial training regarding Partnerships & Innovation and Blue Zones Project’s community programs by supervisor
- Weekly meetings with supervisor
Responsibilities:
- Check in with supervisor for newly assigned tasks and updates on current tasks
- Exhibit and maintain a professional manner when interacting with fellow colleagues, staff, community members and the public
- Time management and accountability including setting and preparing for meetings, tracking work and progress, establishing a scope of work, answering and returning all emails, phone calls, etc.
- Keep track of all hours and turn in time sheet each month
