Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated, detail‑oriented Stained Glass Instructor Assistant for a paid internship. This role is ideal for an emerging artist, art student, or craftsperson who wants hands-on experience in a professional stained glass studio and in a teaching environment. You will support our lead instructors during classes and workshops, help maintain a safe and organized studio, and gradually develop your own technical and teaching skills.
This is a learning-focused position: no prior glass experience is required. You will receive training in studio practices and have the opportunity to build skills that can lead to future teaching or studio roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the lead instructor during beginners to intermediate stained glass classes
- Help demonstrate and reinforce core techniques (glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, and finishing) under instructor supervision, once trained
- Support students one-on-one with basic troubleshooting and technique reminders
- Greet and assist students in both English and Spanish as needed
- Set up classroom space before sessions (tools, materials, patterns, PPE)
- Help clean and reset the studio after classes (tool cleaning, sweeping, organizing materials)
- Monitor and help enforce safety protocols, including proper use of tools and handling of glass, lead, flux, and chemicals
- Assist with simple administrative and classroom tasks (e.g., sign-in sheets, organizing supply lists, taking notes on student progress as requested)
- Help maintain an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging learning atmosphere
- Communicate clearly and professionally with the studio owner, instructors, staff, and students about scheduling, supplies, and student needs
Required Qualifications
- Bilingual in Spanish and English (able to communicate clearly with students and staff in both languages)
- Strong interest in stained glass, art, or crafts; no prior glass experience necessary
- Willingness and ability to learn stained glass tools and processes (glass cutter, grinder, soldering iron, etc.)
- Strong communication and people skills; patient, respectful, and comfortable working with beginners
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions and studio procedures
- Commitment to safety and good work habits in a studio environment
- Must be authorized to work in the United States and able to work on-site in San Pedro, California
- At least 18 years old
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Retail or customer service experience (e.g., working with the public, answering questions, handling basic sales)
- Previous experience in any teaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or assisting role
- Experience working in community studios, art centers, or school art programs
- Basic design or drawing skills, or experience with original artwork
- Experience working with a diverse age range and backgrounds
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods during class sessions
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 25 pounds (glass sheets, tools, and supplies)
- Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm motions (cutting, foiling, soldering)
- Comfortable working around glass, lead, flux, and related studio materials, using appropriate PPE
Schedule & Hours
- Part-time; approximately 10–20 hours per week (exact schedule to be determined)
- Classes typically run Thursday through Sunday, 12pm–5pm; some flexibility may be required based on class schedule
- Occasional special workshops or events as mutually agreed
Compensation & Benefits
