OVERVIEW: Long Beach Transit’s (LBT) College Internship is a year-round, paid internship for undergraduate and graduate students. The Intern will gain real-world work experience on meaningful projects under the guidance of transportation professionals. The Intern will have the opportunity to use problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills to gain valuable experience. The Intern will also work with a mentor for assistance, along with working with various departments to enhance career paths.
As an emerging professional, the Intern will be exposed to LBT’s career opportunities in the public transportation industry. The Intern will gain a deeper awareness of many facets of transportation through LBT’s orientation sessions, cross-departmental projects, and teams, as well as internal networking.
GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Manager, Regulatory Compliance and Civil Rights, —the Intern will directly assist in the representing the interests of LBT, while coordinating programs and activities pertaining to federal and state program compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in monitoring and tracking federally funded procurements for Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and Small Business Enterprise (SBE) participation using compliance software.
- Attend meetings with business groups, disability groups and other advocacy groups.
- Manage, compile and reconcile spreadsheets, and compliance checklist for LBT’s EEO, Title VI, ADA and DBE programs. Assist with business outreach and DBE networking event planning.
- Track and help coordinate collection and management of internal compliance documentation and reporting activities.
- Research relevant topics associated with EEO, DBE, SBE, ADA, Title VI, programs, and projects, perform various analysis and report findings to Manager, Regulatory Compliance and Civil Rights
- Disseminate information, plans, input and concerns expressed by stakeholders to various LBT departments, as appropriate.
- Contribute to the preparation and management of the department’s program compliance and activities calendars and other documents
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Proficient in MS Office applications – Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, Visio. Adobe suite preferred. Excellent written, oral and presentations skills required.
- Communication: Clear and effective verbal and written communication, including the ability to present ideas and feedback.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a Bachelor of Labor Studies, Law, Communications, Public Policy and Public Administration, Political Science, Human Resources, Sociology or a related field program maintaining a 2.7 or above GPA, and a 3.0 GPA or above for graduate students currently enrolled in a master’s degree program, majoring in Political Science, or a related field is preferred.
NORMAL HIRING RANGE: $17.00 to $20.00/hour depending on education level. Part-time internship available to full-time college students; approximately 20-29 hours per week not to exceed up to 1,000 hours within a fiscal year. This position does not offer benefits. Participation in the internship is not an offer of regular full-time or part-time employment with LBT, and it does not guarantee future employment with LBT.
