Every year thousands of Los Angeles County low-income, under-served residents are involved in a civil lawsuit but they cannot complete their legal case because they cannot afford to hire an attorney. These community members face many obstacles, including language barriers, lack of understanding of legal terms and the inability to comprehend court proceedings or orders. In many instances this leads to a situation where parents cannot establish appropriate child custody orders; residents are unable to secure safe, affordable housing; and thousands of individuals are forced to stay in domestic violence situations.
JusticeCorps is an AmeriCorps program administered by California Volunteers. Now entering its 22nd year (2026-2027), the award-winning California JusticeCorps program recruits, trains and places over 180 undergraduates and recent graduates in court-based self-help centers which serve as a single point of access for individuals navigating the court system on their own. JusticeCorps members serving in these centers provide legal information, not advice. Under the direct supervision of attorneys and other legal experts, students teach the public how to represent themselves. JusticeCorps interns serve alongside other college students and legal fellows in a fast paced, supportive environment that emphasizes teamwork and camaraderie.
All majors are welcomed! Prospective JusticeCorps participants are not required to be interested in pursuing a legal career. If you want to develop transferable skills and are interested in giving back to your community, serving a population that is in need, or promoting social justice, JusticeCorps will provide you with a unique opportunity to do so!
