Position: Internship — International Human Rights Law, Roma and Global CDWD Rights

The internship offers an opportunity to engage with the emerging global human rights discourse on Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent (CDWD) and to contribute research and drafting assistance connected with the work of Independent Experts of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The selected intern will engage with the experiences and human rights concerns of Roma and other CDWD communities across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, and contribute to research relevant to the emerging CERD General Recommendation No. 41 on Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake legal and policy research on ICERD and CERD jurisprudence, particularly General Recommendations No. 27 on Roma, No. 29 on descent, No. 34 on People of African Descent, and the emerging General Recommendation No. 41 on CDWD
- Research the situation of Roma communities in Europe and the global Roma diaspora, with particular attention to Roma women and girls, gender discrimination, inherited status, occupational stigma, segregation and exclusion
- Support comparative research on other CDWD communities globally, particularly in Africa and Latin America, while recognising their distinct histories and identities
- Review UN treaty body jurisprudence, Special Procedures, regional human rights standards, academic research and civil society documentation, and prepare concise legal research notes, comparative analyses, background papers, references and draft texts
- Assist in documenting consultations and inputs from Roma, CDWD, women’s rights and other relevant human rights organisations, communities and experts
Qualifications (Who Should Apply)
- Postgraduate students, recent graduates, young researchers and advocates in international human rights law, international law, gender studies or related disciplines are encouraged to apply
- Preference given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge or advocacy experience concerning Roma rights, particularly Roma women’s and gender rights, and familiarity with CERD, ICERD, European and UN human rights mechanisms
- Excellent research, analytical and English drafting skills are essential
- Knowledge of additional UN or European languages will be an advantage
