Caminantes for Education

Caminantes for Education is a resource for Latinx students interested in entering the Education field. As an organization focused on serving future professionals, we have created a space where students can come together to build community, develop academic strengths, and enlarge their networking pool. We seek to increase the number of Latinx teachers in classrooms because there is not enough representation between Latinx students and the educator. We are a community and familia that promotes equity and academic success. 

As a Hispanic Serving Institution, there is a need for culturally responsive organizations on campus. Caminantes for Education provides students with a space and community that champions critical consciousness, cultural competence, and authentic care for Latinx students that are seeking a career in the Education field.With the disparity of cultural representation in schools throughout the nation, Latinx students are being held at a disadvantage and are receiving inadequate support from educators that do not reflect their heritage – Latinx students comprise 55% of all students while only 21% of teachers are Latinx. This disproportion promotes cultural dissonance within the classrooms when harsher punishments are issued toward minority students and alienation becomes the norm. Caminantes for Education seeks to bridge the educational pipeline of Latinx students to Latinx educators.
